JAKARTA, Indonesia, 12 August 2016 – A rare sound of children’s laughter can be heard at Indonesia’s Ministry of Education and Culture, where normally Government staff and their partners focus on developing and implementing education policies. A little girl carrying a doctor’s kit declares that she wants to be a pilot. “I also want to be a doctor, and a teacher,” she proudly tells the high-level delegation of officials from the Governments of Indonesia and New Zealand.

A day in the life of a community midwife in Yemen

In South Sudan, child malnutrition worsens as conflict hinders response

JUBA, South Sudan, 4 August 2016 – Before the fighting that shook South Sudan’s capital of Juba last month, staff at the Al Sabah children’s hospital were admitting about 30 children a day for the treatment of malnutrition. Today that number often surpasses 80.

Averting a major health crisis in Yemen’s capital city

SANA’A, Yemen, 3 August 2016 – When conflict escalated in Yemen in March 2015, the resulting damage to infrastructure cut off electricity to a sewage treatment plant that turns human waste into harmless manure for fertilizing agricultural lands. Production at the plant ground to a halt, and raw sewage water streamed dangerously through Bani Al-Hareth, a district north of the capital, Sana’a.

In Guinea-Bissau, exclusive breastfeeding protects the lives of infants and mothers

BIANGA, Guinea-Bissau, 2 August 2016 – The village of Bianga is located in Guinea-Bissau’s Cacheu Region, near the Cacheu river that feeds into the Atlantic Ocean. It is nearly 100 km from the capital, Bissau, and accessed by a bumpy dirt road that disappears under the dense canopy of cashew and palm trees. The only sound to be heard is the call of birds and the drone of cicadas in the afternoon heat.

Children in Aleppo threatened by new intense fighting and denial of life-saving aid

ALEPPO, Syrian Arab Republic, 2 August 2016 – Children in Aleppo city are again facing terrible threats from new intense attacks and fighting in the western parts of the city, while around 120,000 children are among the nearly 300,000 people cut off from life-saving humanitarian aid in the east. In the past few days, violence and fighting escalated with children in the line of fire.
